Due to the fragile nature of digital media, data rated safes will require that, during a fire, their internal temperature will remain below a particular temperature, so as to protect the digital media inside. This is particularly important if you are storing magnetic media, eg. tapes, ZIP disks, DAT tapes, VHS tapes etc. Temperatures above 57°C can be hazardous to these fragile items, and a basic flame retardant safe might not provide the protection required. Due to the more rigorous testing required for data certification, all digital media safes will protect paper also.
